The future of foreign policy: on the road with Annalena Baerbock

The world is undergoing an unprecedented transformation process: energy transition, climate change, digitalisation, geopolitical issues and, last but not least, foreign policy are at a turning point. As a result, foreign policy is clearly also subject to the acute issues of our time, the frictions and sources of danger. How should diplomacy behave in this complex situation, what communication is important in order not to lose global solidarity? What priorities must or can foreign policy set today? Despite all these circumstances, German Foreign Minister Annalena Baerbock announced the new feminist guidelines in 2023. These focus on a more value-based diplomacy in the long term. Humanism is at the centre. It was clear that she had not only made friends with the term feminist. The Foreign Minister is clearly taking a risk, as the question of who will accompany her on this path in the long term is highly unclear. After the announcement, she received many expressions of solidarity, especially from her colleagues in foreign ministries around the world. How fragile is the chance of a new foreign policy discourse in the end? Who will end up joining in when more relevant issues come up?  The film accompanies Annalena Baerbock and her fellow campaigners on their journey in a time of global crises, wars and supply shortages. The film asks: how do we imagine the politics of the future? What values should shape global coexistence? Last but not least: how capable of empathy can and do we want to be in times of scarce resources, unequal social conditions and the energy crisis and climate issue?  It is necessary to critically accompany and scrutinise the goals and ideas in this project. The film focuses on a number of female foreign ministers who are particularly committed to pursuing this goal: Annalena Baerbock from Germany as the anchor woman, Cathérine Colonna from France, Mélanie Joly from Canada and Battsetseng Batrunka from Monoglei. The women are not only concerned with bringing the question of values to the centre of politics, but also with a completely new style of politics. It's about an exchange based on solidarity, it's about recognising value-based politics.
