Claes Oldenburg

Everday Art in XXL

A major retrospective in Stockholm and Zurich celebrates Claes Oldenburg. His oversized everyday objects in public spaces broke with the tradition of sculpture. Consumer criticism at its highest visual level. A journey through pop, protest, and poetry.

Claes Oldenburg, born in Stockholm in 1929 and raised in the USA, revolutionized the art world by making ordinary everyday objects monumental, thereby ironizing the elitist understanding of art. His art was public, participatory, and critical of consumerism, making it more relevant than ever. His sculptures pose questions that concern us again today: What can art achieve when it is displayed in public spaces? How serious does it have to be? And do we even need all this consumption? The film is a journey through time, exploring his brilliant work, accompanied exclusively by his daughter Maartje Oldenburg, who ran his studio until his death.
