What does it mean to be a couple today – and can art provide us with answers? At a time when open relationships coexist with a return to more conservative gender roles, individuality and independence meet a longing for intimacy and belonging. What does love mean in the space between freedom, desire and uncertainty?

The documentary takes us on a journey from art history to the present day, exploring how artists have portrayed love and relationships – and the role their own biographies have played in these representations. Art tells stories of dreams and realities, intimacy and distance, desire and vulnerability, love and pain.

Iconic works alongside contemporary artistic perspectives reveal couples as a reflection of changing societies. At the same time, they remind us that while the circumstances in which relationships exist have changed dramatically, the fundamental questions surrounding love have remained remarkably similar. The film invites us to look at these images anew – and, through them, to reconsider our own ideas of love today.
