Silent Awakening (AT)
Quietly, virtually without notice, the Jewish community in Germany has experienced a profound change in recent years. It has become more diverse – ethnically, as well as culturally and in religious terms. Whether strictly orthodox or liberal-progressive, members of the younger generation are confronted with the task of preserving the legacy of their Jewish identity, reshaping it, and creating unity. But what role is played by a female perspective in this development? What views are held by young Jewish women in Germany concerning tradition and faith, feminism and female role models? How much are they contributing to the shaping of contemporary Judaism?
We accompany three young women who have highly contrasting perspectives of and positions on what their Jewish faith means for lived experience. Each searches for her own path, for her own identity as a modern woman, and each struggles to explore and to define her relationship to her faith. How can tradition the harmonized with contemporary life? Individual needs with religious strictures? The documentary illustrates the challenges and the complexity involved in reconciling the lived Jewish faith with the daily reality of modern women.
