Hélène de Beauvoir

The forgotten painter

She was ahead of her time and counted Picasso among her admirers,  she was a painter, a feminist and an activist. More than 3000 works of art were created during her lifetime, they were political, courageous and showed attitude - like Hélène de Beauvoir herself. Art as an instrument of resistance, at a time when women still had (almost) no voice. It is therefore all the more surprising that this personality has been completely forgotten. A woman who was described by Picasso as an ‘original’, who was president of a women's refuge, who signed the influential manifesto of the 343 women who had illegal abortions in 1971. Was the shadow of the BIG sister too big? Simone de Beauvoir: feminist icon, novelist and philosopher. She gave her younger sister a hard time, at the latest after the publication of her groundbreaking feminist work ‘The Opposite Sex’. The film Hélène de Beauvoir - the forgotten painter aims to bring this important artist back into the present.  From the shadow of her famous sister. Hélène - no less relevant, just less publicised.
